Burton Blunt White Snowboard

And if we would plot the innovation?

Tech Crunch

bluenove and Mapize , a startup Corsican we talked about during the summer, has unveiled a map to see actors of open innovation on a map. It looks like a kind of visual Crunchbase . The project, developed over several months and officially unveiled last week during LeWeb allows to see three groups of actors: " ideators " (these are startups, developers, researchers, etc..), The " Scouts "(VCs, angels, journalists, etc..), And" open innovators "(the departments of R & D programs, partnerships of major groups, etc.).. Thanks

Catalogue of players developed through this project, and bluenove Mapize aim to facilitate collaboration and innovation around the world, because this project is not just the French players but the whole community entrepreneurial. Some players have already been registered but for others it will have to identify yourself to add your name to the database. Registration is free, but large groups could buy the interface for managing their strategies of open innovation and develop their own internal databases.

The Open Innovation Map makes me think of another recent initiative from Paris Labs : a social network dedicated to French startups and entrepreneurship in France, dubbed Startupers.fr . More than a base of players, the network aims to facilitate the exchange directly on the platform. During registration, we identify their interests (community management, recruitment, business plans, etc.). and then we may share information in the same way as on Twitter, Yammer, Facebook.

Yet Startupers.fr is not the first social network dedicated to entrepreneurship, there are other sites like YouNoodle , Sprouter and WeStartUp - a Belgian startup that wants to become "the" social network for European entrepreneurs. However, Startupers.fr is the first network that is only for French startups and there are already 127 local startups listed on the site. You can also find a list of events, like Agendao , a new website offering all business events, as does Workit United States.

Many of you have to tell me about the possibility of creating a Crunchbase dedicated solely to French startups. At a time when everyone is thinking internationally, the idea of creating a database just for French clubs seemed a little odd. However, I understand very well why a site like Startupers.fr have more utility for local startups like Sprouter a site that is not addressed necessarily problematic for local startups. So take a look at the Open Innovation Map and Startupers.fr (subscribing to the private beta with the code: # TCFR) and do not forget to also register if you do Crunchbase the have not yet done!

forgotten migrants of Yemen in Guadeloupe

Blog Le Monde Diplomatique

Yemen does not seem to be the first place you think to go in search of safety or a better life: extreme poverty, tribal rebels uprisings, armed conflicts persist, infested seas Pirates ... Yet each year tens of thousands of refugees arriving from the Horn of Africa with the hope of escape war, persecution, famine and drought.

William Spindler spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in France. The

photojournalism is Rocco Nuri.

Sea Watch

In the first nine months of 2010, more than 36 000 migrants and refugees have begun the perilous crossing of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Many of them have lost their lives. Far from the eyes of the world and cameras, this human tragedy is being played for years. In silence.

Horn of Africa: migration paths
Cartography: Philippe Rekacewicz (Atlas 2009 Monde Diplomatique)

On 17 September 2010, two Somalis, one of which was five months pregnant, drowned off the coast of Yemen, while the smugglers landed in deep water, in total darkness, the 55 passengers a boat part of a village east of Bossaso in northern Somalia. They sailed through rough seas for more than 40 hours before reaching Bir Ali, 500 km east of Aden in Yemen. Fifty-two people managed to reach shore. The bodies of two women were found and buried in the vicinity of Bir Ali. The body of the third person, not identified, was never found. The same week, an Ethiopian was beaten to death by smugglers in a boat carrying 105 African migrants. The man was trapped in the engine room traffickers have begged to give him water. His body was thrown overboard. Two examples among hundreds of crossings ... The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) operates a camp in Yemen, where 12,650 people gather and collect, day after day, the testimony of the most appalling conditions on the crossings and cruel smugglers.

In the heat of August, in Bab al-Mandab, a small village at the entrance to the Red Sea (about 190 miles west of Aden), two young Yemenis are working in a small office next to a gas station. These are the premises of the Danish Refugee Council (DRC). Their mission is to patrol the coast looking for recently arrived migrants from Africa. "Alas, we arrived too late and we find them dead, they lament . Between June and August 2010, more than 40 corpses were discovered by the people or the authorities there and around the village of Bab el-Mandab. "

They work in symbiosis with a broad network of contacts (police, army, coast guards, but also local civil society), and in close liaison with UNHCR and the Yemeni Red Crescent, which provides first aid, water and energy bars to newcomers. "On average, at least three boats dock daily they say, and some time ago, we even counted eight in one day! This means that between 250 and 300 people arrive each day (or come to swim) on the Yemeni coast.

Although the security and humanitarian situation in Somalia deteriorates, the number of arrivals from Somalia to Yemen has a steep decline. According to newly arrived refugees, it is becoming increasingly dangerous and difficult to flee Somalia. Many displaced civilians are literally trapped inside the country. There are a dozen checkpoints on the road between Mogadishu and the port of Bossaso, obliged by various militias and armed groups. This explains that in 2010 only 10% of new arrivals came from Somalia, Ethiopia all the other ".

Migrants make a long journey, if physically demanding, exhausting if they get very weak and in very poor health. "Last week, they continue, ten Ethiopians died of dehydration and disease after their arrival ". UNHCR has established procedures for registration, identification and burial of bodies. The Yemeni Red Crescent, in coordination with local authorities, identifies the body and delivers medical reports concerning the cause of death. Most are buried around Bab al-Mandab.

In the refugee camp of Al Kharaz, about 40 km west Bab al-Mandab, a refugee Ethiopian arrived the day before walking slowly through the aisles, haggard. "I crossed the desert for two days from the Ethiopian border, says he then I was held up by smugglers in an isolated place near the port in Djibouti Obock, with hundreds other refugees: they were men, women and children. There was no food or drinking water. The smugglers we were selling bottled water at exorbitant prices. Those who could not pay had to drink contaminated water and salt pits, next. Some fell ill and died. Then we finally took a boat. "

" I think there are more than 1 000 Ethiopians and 300 Somalis Obock he says; they expect to reach Yemen. Every day, four or five people die of hunger or diarrhea. Doctor Medical Clinic Al Kharaz says that in three days, they admitted 26 Ethiopians suffering from severe gastroenteritis.

There are some 12,000 Somalis and 650 Ethiopian refugees living in Al Kharaz camp, some of them for over ten years. The new refugees receive care, food and water, and then are stored - at first - for a period of three months. Even if they receive free housing, food, access to education and care, few of them remain in camp, Al Kharaz is a sad and isolated place. Those who may prefer to live elsewhere in Aden or Sana'a and fend for themselves. "We know that life is very hard here, Yemen, and it is difficult to find a job, said a young Somali . But it's still better than Somalia. "

Yemen, one of the poorest countries in the world, is quite hospitable to refugees and asylum seekers, since it affords protection to 233,000 Somali refugees, while Saudi Arabia and Kenya come to expel thousands. Faces many social problems, economic and security, Yemen would need the support of the international community, which for now remains deaf and dumb. UNHCR is facing a dramatic financial situation that threatens its operations in the country and will be forced to close some shelters if the situation does not improve quickly.

Cartography: Dr. R. (Le Monde Diplomatique, September 2009)

Some of the refugees try to reach Saudi Arabia for employment as a laborer or servant. "If you have money, the smugglers take you to drive in Saudi Arabia after arrival, a migrant Ethiopian says. Otherwise, you must walk to the border. "The road to Saudi Arabia is made dangerous and uncertain not only because of the conflict underway in the north, but also because they may fall into the hands of traffickers who sell them as sex slaves or forced laborers. And these networks are highly organized. Sometimes - too often - that these traffickers are arrested, tried and convicted. 25 September 2010, two Yemenis and an Ethiopian national has been sentenced to ten years imprisonment for selling a young Somali refugee from 16 years to traffickers to serve as sex slave in a brothel in Saudi Arabia. The girl, found in Riyadh and returned to Mogadishu, is in good health and joined Europe with his mother.

Most victims of this deadly traffic are not so lucky: The UN estimated 12.3 million people worldwide victims of human trafficking. Buying and selling of human beings for exploitation is, with arms trafficking, the second largest criminal industry in the world and has the fastest growth.

The Industry: An industry meet its challenges

INSEE

Project team: Ali BENHADDOUCHE, Melanie Christanval, Gaelle Philibert, Pierre Valadou (INSEE) Ludovic de Gaillands (DRIRE)

Guadeloupe has known for 40 years of strong economic growth and sustained, so much so that it has long figured in the top spots of the French regions in terms of growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Nevertheless, from 2004 to 2009, there was a sharp slowdown in its development: the GDP grew only 1.3% per year on average a pace growth almost three times slower than in the previous 40 years.

Composed of nearly 3,400 establishments, the industry employs 8,500 employees Guadeloupe. Like the other overseas departments, its share of regional value added is low. In Guadeloupe, it accounts for 5% to the regional value added. However, the need for its development is required for reasons
- economic, with the need to develop job creation, reduce dependency vis-à-vis the mainland France and the European Union and thus the costs of products;

Migration flows: Moves to and from Marseille by La Poste

JP Blog - technoselect

Inspired by "Real Time Rome" from MIT, joined the Post Office to perform an experiment FaberNovel dynamic visualization of flow installation and removal, called Flux2. This experiment based on the anonymized file address changes to The Post allows you to view over the year 2009 the movement of families to and from the Bouches du Rhone. A dynamic approach to exploit so demonstrative data on the postal business can be difficult to structure.

Explanations:

* The green arrows indicate the place of departure of the families arriving in this department.
* Red arrows inform the new home of families leaving the department.
* The thickness of the arrows gives the importance of this migration.
* The data were anonymised and only the postal code was used.

Culturomics: Understanding the laws of culture - Mapping

technology is changing our understanding of the humanities and social sciences (SHS), as it has changed our understanding of science, there is little explained Patricia Cohen for the New York Times . Of course, given this goal, digital media are a means than an end, says historian Anthony Grafton conscientiously. But for Brett Bobley, director of the office digital humanities the National Endowment of the Humanities American ( National Endowment for the Humanities , NEH), analysis of unprecedented amounts of data can reveal new patterns and trends and raise unexpected issues for the study.

"Technology has not only made astronomy, biology and physics more effectively. But it has allowed researchers to do research they could not do before ". And this is especially the case in the field SHS, where access to great documentary corpus in electronic form may bring new knowledge. In any case, that aims to show the support of Google or Digging into data, a grant program to help research in the humanities to move in new directions, propelled by Brett Bobley office at NEH.

The digital humanities to understand the world
As so often in the field of Digital Humanities (Humanities Digital ), for non-specialists, it is results that are the most interesting. One of the projects have benefited from this program is that of Dan Edelstein, a professor of French and Italian at Stanford University who conducted map the flow of ideas during the Enlightenment , studying with Using the computer, the correspondence of the great thinkers of the time (Locke, Newton, Voltaire, Swift, Rousseau, Bentham ...). Interactive mapping implementation better measure the relationship network of the great thinkers of the eighteenth century and shows that it has very different structures according thinkers ( video ). Mapping has shown, for example, the scarcity of exchanges between Paris and London, while historians believed that the French thinkers were inspired by British thinkers: in fact, the thinkers of the Continent seem to have little exchange with the British Isles.

American universities seem to be actively digital tools. The University of Virginia has developed for its students a web interface, called Visual Eyes , to easily build dynamic and interactive visualizations.

Digital Mappaemundi project is a study of medieval maps and geographical texts, allowing researchers to annotate their cards simultaneously and share their notes with others, says Martin Foys K medievalist at the University Drew in New Jersey. "The digital map has the potential to transform the medieval studies" , said the enthusiastic researcher, particularly because they are communal, that is to say, shared by a network of experts whose contributions contribute to the quality of the project. "The ease with which a community may have to work through these tools is something that fundamentally changes the way we do our work" . Except that sharing culture is not necessarily placed between specialists, and often all functions are far from being used by researchers, who are more in competition with each other on their research.

The phenomenon of digital humanities is still new and practitioners are still often surprised by what develops. When the complete works of Abraham Lincoln published have been online a few years ago, the director of Cahiers Abraham Lincoln, Daniel W. Stowell, expected that historians are more attentive to his project. But he was surprised to discover that the most frequent users were people connecting from the University Press, Oxford: the Oxford dictionary editors had gone to hunt in the archives Lincoln first occurrences of certain words.

"People will use this data in ways that we can not even imagine" enthuses Daniel Stowell, "and I think this is one of the most exciting developments of the humanities currently ". Tom Scheinfeldt, director of the Center for history and new media at George Mason University, the university has entered an era "post-theoretical" . a "methodological moment" similar to that experienced in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. "Practical issues of building the discipline of assembling an annotated bibliography, the definition of a research program and the significance of the role of the historian" were then the main work of a large number of scholars. Are we now entering a similar phase? That's what qu'espèrent proponents of digital humanities anyway.

Understanding the evolution of language laws
is in this context that we understand the new tool has unveiled Google Google N-Grams - a name inspired by the work of theorist Claude Shannon and information that evokes n-grams (sequences of consecutive words), apparently widely used Programs by language processing. Google N-Grams is search engine that searches the 5.2 million books scanned by Google and freely accessible to the public, says New York Times , 500 billion words, as it rightly marvel Jean Veronis on his blog, or "4% of books never published on Earth." A tool which allows you to draw curves lexical over several centuries, since the basis of books on which it is constructed consists of books published between 1500 and today, from a body divided into 5 languages
.

can thus see that Marilyn Monroe and Mickey Mouse do not receive the same attention as printed books ... Or as Freud has become a more important Galileo, Einstein or Darwin ...

"The goal is to give a child 8 years the ability to browse the cultural mood of the story as recorded in the books " said Erez Lieberman Aiden, a Harvard researcher among authors from MIT, Google, the Encyclopaedia Britannica and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt signatories section of the journal Science makes the news .

This new tool will require a lot of reflection on the various biases in the way data are collected, "said biologist Paul Ehrlich, whose investigations into the evolution the Polynesian canoe has transformed cultural studies, and notes, for example, the frequency of obscenity can not only be an indicator of cultural trend .

Culturomics, Genomics ... "There was a big hype around the draft human genome causing ... Before we understand that this list n was not very helpful to those who are not specialists " believes Mark Pagel, evolutionary biologist at the University of Reading. " We now understand that this is not the genes that are important, but how they are expressed in organs.

"I'm not saying that the data are not useful" , he said. "But the database does not" spit "simple answers". Nothing will be easier in fact that to make out a lot of banalities.
